Tadatoshi Akiba, Mayor of Hiroshima, signs the Europe for Peace Declaration

Posted on 2 September 2007

Dear Friends of Peace in Europe,

I am more than happy to express my support for the Europe for Peace Declaration. Though I am not European, I sign this declaration as one of the millions of people around the world now looking to Europe for hope in the realms of peace and abolition of nuclear weapons.

The fact that two of the five demands in this Declaration address the nuclear threat evidences an understanding that eliminating these weapons is prerequisite to solving any of the environmental, economic, social and political problems we face as a species.

I assure you that the city of Hiroshima and the nearly 1700 members of Mayors for Peace will do anything in our power to support this initiative. I have no doubt that an outbreak of peace in Europe would prove highly contagious.

Tadatoshi Akiba
